“Sunday, we had a trip planned about 30 miles away. We were going to eat lunch with friends and do a bit of sightseeing. It was such a hot day, there was no way we could take Buddy. Still, he tried to convince us. He grabbed his leash and ran to the door with it hanging out of his mouth.”
His little eyes were so alive with hope. I nearly cried. I’m such a softie.
Gathering strength, I told him he had to stay home, the heat would hurt him. Hearing the “no” he sadly went back upstairs, his leash still in his mouth. I waved goodbye at the door and we took off for our trip.
Thoughts of his little sad eyes stayed with me, and I had all these writing goals on my mind. Me and the keyboard are not long apart anymore, my writing is serious business, though often the topics are not.
So, after a couple of hours, I gave the signal to my husband that we needed to go. When we arrived home, our Buddy greeted us with happiness, not at all hinting that we had hurt his feelings. He’s so forgiving. After he had his potty break, I came upstairs and stopped when I looked at the couch.
There, on his blanket, was his leash. He had taken it to the couch, and layed down with it, waiting for our return.
He had wanted to go so badly, that he slept with his leash for comfort. It’s obvious to me, that dogs have feelings, too.
We have work conference coming up in a couple of weeks; I don’t know how we’re going to leave him for 2 1/2 days. Our dog sitter won’t be here night and day, she’ll just pop in and check on him.
Since we’ll only be 30 miles away, I bet we sneak home. Our baby needs us.
